ADVICE BOOKLET FOR 16-17 YEAR OLDS (CHNI)

If you’re 16-17 and having housing difficulties, this booklet can help you as a starting point. It outlines your rights and what to expect when accessing support. It also lists organisations who can help you.

Living on your own at 16 & 17 can be really tough. So, even though it may seem impossible at the moment, staying at home might be the best option in the long run.

The help you are entitled to will depend on your circumstances. Be sure to get up to date information and advice. Contact an advice agency or one of the organisations in this booklet.

(This booklet was published in 2014 and some contact details/content may have changed).

ADVICE AND SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS

Young people leaving care can be at an increased risk of homelessness and of being exploited. Social Services and the Housing Executive share responsibility for looking after young people who are homeless. You can contact either (see details above). The help you get will depend on your circumstances, including your age and how long you’ve been in care, but these organisations should work together to find you somewhere to live.

If you feel you need more support and advice, or you feel that Social Services / NIHE aren’t giving you the help you need, you can contact VOYPIC, MACS or Housing Rights for additional support.
