NEED HOUSING ADVICE? NEED EMERGENCY SUPPORT?

ADVICE AND SIGNPOSTING

AM I HOMELESS OR IN HOUSING CRISIS?

Many times a housing crisis leaves people at risk of homelessness and needing help immediately. Other times, it is less obvious that you may be in housing problems. You may not even realise that you are homeless, for example, you may be sleeping on a relative’s sofa, staying in overcrowded conditions, or somewhere that isn’t safe or good for your health.

GET ADVICE AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

If housing is a problem for you, or if you are currently homeless, it's important that you SEEK ADVICE AND SUPPORT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Don't be afraid to ask for help - there are services out there and they do want to help.

There is no single service or piece of advice that can help everyone who experiences homelessness or is having problems with housing. The support available to you will depend on a number of factors, including your personal circumstances, whether you have children, where you are from, and whether you need any additional help. So it’s important that you get advice as soon as you can to get the best help available to you.

OKAY, BUT WHERE DO I GO FOR ADVICE?

It can be scary when you don’t know where to turn for help. We cannot give you advice or support directly, but we can tell you who you should contact if you need housing advice, or temporary accommodation.

USE THIS PAGE AS A STARTING POINT TO FIND THE SUPPORT YOU NEED.

#top #NIHE

#1. CONTACT THE HOUSING EXECUTIVE  034 4892 0900

THIS SHOULD BE THE FIRST PLACE YOU CONTACT

If you’re homeless or you think you’re close to becoming homeless, your first stop should be the NI Housing Executive (NIHE). If at all possible, don’t leave it until you are homeless or in crisis to contact them - get help as soon as you can. If you’ve already contacted the NIHE and feel you need more advice (including help speaking to them), contact one of the independent advice agencies below.

FIND YOUR NEAREST OFFICE ON THE NIHE WEBSITE

HELP IN A CRISIS “OUT OF HOURS”   028 95049 999

If you need assistance ‘out of hours’ (this means after 5pm on weekdays, at weekends, or on public holidays), call the Regional Emergency Social Work Service (RESWS). This service is responsible for emergency homelessness for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) and emergency financial issues for the Social Security Agency outside normal working hours. PLEASE USE THIS NUMBER IN A CRISIS ONLY.

#ADVICE

#2. GET SOME ADVICE.

Even if you’ve contacted the Housing Executive, it makes sense to get independent advice.

If you are unsure of what to do, or unsure about your rights or circumstances, get independent advice. Again, get this advice as soon as you can.

Even if you’ve already contacted the NIHE and feel you need more advice, or you are unhappy with what they’ve told you, contact one of the independent advice agencies listed. (Other advice services listed in a section below).

An advice agency, like Housing Rights, will explain your rights, help you understand the decisions made by the NIHE, may be able to find you emergency / temporary accommodation,  and may even speak to the NIHE on your behalf.

Support is available in many forms. There is a 24 hour helpline you can contact for initial support, and get access to refuge accommodation (women and children, and there may be age restrictions on male children).
